Rant.

One of my BIGGEST pet peeves about college is seeing the vast amount of students who slack off too much and favor drinking, smoking, and partying over being productive and getting things done for school (especially freshmen). I'm not trying to say that every student at JWU who parties is a bad student or a bad person, but it just amazes me how many students cannot function in class unless they are high. Or how many students cannot make it through one weekend without going to a party, bar, and/or club, and getting drunk. I personally don't drink or smoke, for a lot of reasons, but it makes me sad to see how much time and money people waste when they make partying a priority over school.

Anyone who goes here is no stranger to the fact that JWU is very expensive. And to see students waste their time and money here because they "can't get through the day without smoking" is just so odd to me. There are so many more important things in life and, contrary to popular belief, smoking and drinking doesn't make anyone look cool. I don't have sympathy for people who show up to class hungover and complain that they're tired or have a headache because they were drinking. People don't take responsibility for their actions and they have no one to blame but themselves. Not to mention, I find it really rude and unprofessional to show up to class and complain that they don't want to be there the whole time, just because they are hungover and tired or they need a cigarette. If you know you're going to stay out late/party too much, then why sign up for early classes? And I cannot stand listening to people brag about whatever party they went to over the weekend because I honestly don't care.

I know a lot of people here can balance their party and school life well, but a lot of people here also can't seem to. And a lot of people have a lot of different opinions about this, but it just gets really old after a while.

  1. I completely and wholly agree with this rant. Why spend the money to go to the ivy league of culinary colleges just so you can party? You can do that at a community college. I smoke occasionally, but I do not believe that "I needed a cigarette" is an appropriete excuse for being late to class.

I believe that whatever an individual chooses to do with their life should be well balanced with their education, like you said. Education comes first, so partying should obviously be second, and done smartly. Letting alcohol, drugs, etc get in the way with your education is just ridiculous and honestly, stupid.

  2. I could not agree more! Even when I go home over breaks, the first question I'm asked by teens and other college students is "How are the parties up there?!". It's ridiculous how people spend so much money and waste their lives away for drugs of all sort when they have so much potential to succeed.

  3. You took the topic that I was going to rant about! But I completely agree with you on this. I know a handful of people who just go through the motions of the week, and the only thing that's on their minds is what kind of alcohol do they want to drink the upcoming weekend. Honestly, it's sad because as you said we are paying so much money to go to this school, and some of these students pay double that just through all of the purchases of alcohol they "need". I think that there are some students that can balance it, and who only go out a couple times, but to the students who decide to party on a Tuesday night…it might be in your best interest to find another place to waste your $41,000 a year.

  4. So true! I myself enjoy an occasional SundayFunday drink at the bar, but I manage to bring myself to class and work at 100%! When I hear others complain about how late they stayed up really grinds my gears! I mean I get it, we all have personal lives outside of school whether its work or social circles. But we are adults and we need to know when its time to play and its time to get serious. If you cant figure out how to seperate the two then you need a reality check! Great Rant cause people need to open their eyes
