I spent my internship in Cape Cod this winter. It was a very positive experience working at a restaurant with such great quality products and ideas. However, Cape Cod is not an interesting place during the winter months in any sense of the word. It was just very cold and boring. When I was not working at the restaurant I sat in my room at the house I rented.
My first week at the restaurant, I was living in a hotel because I could not find a place to live while I was there. One of the employees at the restaurant offered me to rent a room in his house where only him and his wife lived. Out of desperation, I took the offer fairly quickly. Time passed so slowly while I sat in my room staring at the blank blue walls. The barren room was on the verge of driving me insane, and I began buying things to help my time spent in this house pass with less frustration. The best purchase I made was a small portable space heater.
The house was built in 1979 and its walls were thin and wind would scratch up against the windows constantly. The heat seemed to hardly work, and the owners never turned it on. This space heater was the only thing that brought me comfort and warmth. Without it, my internship would certainly have been more torturous.
